Officially founded in 1869, the University of Otago is now located in Dunedin, Otago New Zealand. It is a non collegiate university and known for high quality research. The university in the past has topped the New Zealand Performance Based Research Fund evaluation. The university was developed by the committee that was led by Thomas Burns (a prominent European religious leader) and officially established by an ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council. It started accepting its first batch of students in the year 1871 which made it the oldest university in New Zealand and the third in Oceania. Between the years 1847-1961, the university was a part of University of New Zealand and issued the degree in its name. The University of Otago offers a vibrant students life and its students magazine named “Critic” is New Zealand’s longest running school magazine. The university’s architecture accompanied with its beautiful gardens has made it to be one of the most beautiful campuses in the world.

The main campus of the university is in Dunedin which hosts central administration as well as divisions of Health Sciences, Business School, Humanities and Science. In addition to this, the university also has satellite campuses in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Invercargill.

The campus of Christchurch is based at the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health and provides training programs in medical and physiotherapy , research, distance education and some postgraduate programs

Wellington campus based at the Wellington School of Medicine and Health Science also provide training programs in medical and physiotherapy , research, distance education and some postgraduate programs

The Auckland campus located at the Auckland Centre on Queen serves as teaching and distance learning centre for various courses as well as the liaisoning office for wider Auckland community and alumni

The university’s Department of Marine Science operates the Portobello Marine Laboratory in the Otago peninsula region.

The University of Otago has 10 libraries out of which 7 are based in the main campus in Dunedin, 1 in the Southland and two of these libraries each in Wellington and Christchurch. All ofthese libraries have an access to the wireless network.
